History of La Mesa Church of Christ

In 1940 a group of Christians from El Cajon Boulevard Church of Christ, San Diego came to La Mesa with the vision of planting a new congregation. They first met at the La Mesa Women’s Club in downtown La Mesa and in 1947 moved to a building they constructed on La Mesa Boulevard. The congregation outgrew that facility by the late 1950s. 5150 Jackson Drive, an easily-accessible site near the then brand-new Interstate 8, was purchased and in 1961-62 the church members – men, women, and children – would come together in the evenings and on Saturdays to construct our current church building, which we have occupied since 1962. The camaraderie that developed during the construction project led to close ties among the members and left a legacy of caring and love that continues to this day.

In 2010 this facility was extensively remodeled and has since been the home of the College Preparatory Middle School, a public charter school, as well as several after-school activities. We consider this partnership to be consistent with our vision of serving the community.

We humbly acknowledge that all of this has been by God’s grace and power.

Our past local ministries have included Prison Ministry, Vacation Bible Schools, and Thursday Bible Center for preschool age kids. In 2003, we undertook a comprehensive review of our outreach opportunities and concluded that we can have the greatest impact by reaching out to families with children at home. As a result, we place special emphasis on our Children’s and Youth Ministries. Our facility has also hosted various community activities, such as recovery groups, marriage seminars, a seminar for women with disabilities, and Parents’ Turn-Kids’ Turn meetings.

Foreign mission efforts have included financial and/or spiritual support for work in Korea, Brazil, El Salvador, Mexico, and Senegal. Within the United States, this congregation has also played a role in planting or supporting churches in Lemon Grove, California, in San Luis, Arizona, and a Spanish-speaking congregation – Iglesia de Cristo, College Area, San Diego.

We humbly acknowledge that all of this has been by God’s grace and power.

We invite you to join us this Sunday for worship or for any of our upcoming activities and events.
